God Created Us In His Image, And Then What?
In the past week, I have had a re-occurring, nagging question and I've finally made the time to pay attention to and address it. It's actually a question that comes to my mind now and again, and each time I seek to answer it, my knowledge on the topic expands. The question comes to mind framed in different ways, but ultimately it boils down to this - "What is the Purpose of My Existence?"
As I was praying this morning, this verse from the book of Genesis in the Bible came to mind:
"So God created man in His own image; in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them."
What a reminder, and a powerful answer to the nagging question in my mind. These words can be and have been interpreted in many ways, but what they ultimately mean to me is that I have been created by God, therefore I am of God, I am a part of God, I am made of the same substance as God, I am like God. What a powerful testament of my being, it literally lifted me up in spirit and body. I felt a surge of optimism and purpose rush through me, and I stood up from my prayer. A split second later this reaffirmed knowledge was followed by another questioned - "And then what?"
I am of God... and then what? What does it mean to be of God, what does it mean to be like God? In essence, this boils down to the purpose of my existence, again. I am here on Earth, I have been created by God, through humans, so what now? Well, I believe that it really is up to me. I can do or be whatever I want. So, what will I choose? What will you choose?
Life is about choice, and it's an every day thing. Wherever we find ourselves in life is where we have chosen to be. I don't believe that we can control every single thing that happens to and around us, but we can choose our life experience in broader terms. Being created in the image and likeness of God means that we have the ability to create our life experiences, and that starts by choosing what kind of life experience we want. Once you have chosen the kind of life experience that you want you also need to choose how you will go about getting it. As the saying goes, "There are many ways to skin a cat".
Your life is your choice. God has put you here and you must choose what you will make of this earthly experience. What will it be? I hope that this question help you gain clarity about the purpose of your existence.
