SEEKING CLARITY AND RE-ALIGNMENT PART 3: CHURCH
As I sit typing this article, I have a TD Jakes sermon playing in the background. Right now he is saying:
"What God is most concerned about is belief, believing in him. He says "I know you're weak, I know you make mistakes, I know you've erred along the way, but if you believe Me, it is counted unto you as righteousness."
Believing in Him has definitely helped me on this particular journey of seeking clarity and alignment, and church, or rather church sermons and lessons have contributed immensely.
I Am "Churched Up"
I have always been a "church girl". I have been to so many churches in my life, and baptised in two. I am pretty open minded about church. I have found it hard to believe that one particular church is the absolute only correct one, because I have found many similarities between the churches I have attended.
I started out at the Dutch Reformed Church because my paternal grandfather was an Evangelist at that church, my mom was and her family still are Methodist. My mom also introduced me to charismatic churches when we moved to Durban, we attended Durban Christian Centre. Later, a friend invited me to the Christian Science Church which was very close to my home, so I attended that for a short period of time, then went back to Durban Christian Centre because most of my friends went there. After my mom passed on I was introduced to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latterday Saints, which is where my current membership is, but lately I have been visiting the Catholic church because my man is Catholic, and a charismatic church with a friend because the sermons are so motivational there. Also, my oldest brother has walked in my grandfather's footsteps and is a pastor at a charismatic church and a theological author, and whenever I am with him he shares some theological wisdom with me. So, as you can tell, I am "churched up"! I love church.
Church Reminds Me That Life Is Spiritual
I love church because it reminds that there is more to my life than what I see and hear with my physical eyes and ears everyday. It reminds me that I am a spiritual being and everything that is is spiritual. Everything that has been created was first an idea - in the mind, non-tangible, intelligence. Therefore, for me, I believe that anything that I want can be created, as long as I create it first in my mind. I also believe that this world started out as an idea and the owner of that idea is God. I believe in God. Church, church sermons and church lessons re-emphasize and re-ignite this belief in me.
Church Has Helped Me Gain Clarity and Re-Alignment
“Time is your most precious gift because you only have a set amount of it. You can make more money, but you can't make more time. Your time is your life. " Rick Warren, The Purpose Driven Life
The biggest piece of the puzzle that I have had to figure out on this journey of clarity and re-alignment is my purpose in life. For me, my purpose should inform how I spend my time in this life. Purpose is the grandest of goals. Being reminded that there is a bigger story that I am a part of, reminds me to think bigger of myself, my purpose and the one who created me. It reminds me that everything and anything is possible. It reminds me that I can defy the odds. Being a 'realistic optimist' and often logical and scientific about things, I often need this reminder, and church does that for me.
With all of that said, I can't wait to go to church tomorrow! Are you going?
